Meet Our Team

Mr Kevin Cronin

Mr Cronin graduated in medicine from UCD in 1990 and completed his surgical training between Ireland and internationally renowned centres such as the Bernard O’Brien Institute of Microsurgery in Melbourne, Australia, as well as the Radcliffe Infirmary, Oxford, and Salisbury District Hospital, UK. He was awarded his Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (FRCSI) in 1993 and obtained a Master of Surgery Degree from the University of Melbourne in 2002. 

 

Mr Cronin is an active member of the Irish Hand Surgery Society (IHSS) and served as its secretary from 2006 to 2010. He was Chair of the Medical Board at the Children’s University Hospital, Temple Street, in 2006.

 

Mr Cronin’s areas of specialist interest include brachial plexus and peripheral nerve surgery, hand surgery, paediatric plastic surgery, and skin cancer. He has public appointments at the Mater Hospital, the Children's University Hospital and the Central Remedial Clinic.

Ms Shirley Potter

Dr Potter graduated from NUI, Galway in 2003 with both a medical degree and an intercalated BSc degree in Anatomy. Following basic surgical training, she completed her PhD in tumour biology funded by the HRB Clinician Scientist Research Scholarship. Subsequently she undertook specialist training in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery in Ireland and then moved to Australia for fellowship training, having received the Colles Scholarship from RCSI and Rowan Nicks International Scholarship from the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons. Her first fellowship was in reconstructive microsurgery and brachial plexus surgery at St Vincent’s Hospital and The Alfred Hospital, Melbourne. This was followed by a fellowship in cancer reconstruction at Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre, Melbourne, an internationally recognised centre of excellence for cancer treatment. Here Dr Potter specialised in the treatment of melanoma and advanced head and neck skin cancer. She further specialised in reconstructive microsurgery at the world-renowned Chang Gung Memorial Hospital, Taiwan. 

 

Dr Potter holds an Adjunct Associate Professor position with UCD and has a strong research portfolio, having published widely. She acts as Principal Investigator supervising masters and PhD students under the Wellcome-HRB Intercalated Clinical and Academic Training program. She is an active member of Cancer Trials Ireland, editorial reviewer for several international peer review journals and Chairperson of the Scientific Committee for the Irish Association of Plastic Surgeons. Dr Potter has completed a Masters in Medical Education and has developed a reputation as a surgical educator, with a special interest in microsurgery simulation. She is a faculty member for the RCSI core and higher surgical training programmes, and actively partakes in events for both RCSI and UCD Surgical Societies for medical students.

 

Dr Potter is is currently working as a consultant at the Mater Misericordiae University Hospital and Temple Street Children Hospital, Dublin. Her areas of special interest include cancer reconstruction, reconstructive microsurgery, peripheral nerve surgery, and the treatment of melanoma and advanced skin cancer.

 

In her spare time Dr Potter is an ultra marathon runner, and also enjoys open water swimming and off-piste skiing.

Mr Dylan Murray

Mr Murray first qualified as a dentist with an honours degree and returned to Trinity College to complete his medical training, from where he qualified in 1996.

 

Following two years of surgical training he was awarded the Fellowship in surgery (FRCSI). He undertook further specialisation in Oral and Maxillofacial surgery and in 2000 was successful in the Fellowship in Oral Surgery (FFD – Oral Surgery).

 

He began his Plastic Surgery training in Ireland and then undertook three subspecialist training programs in Toronto, Canada. His first role was in reconstructive microsurgery. This was followed by a year and a half of Craniomaxillofacial Surgery, the first six months of which was spent working in adult facial reconstruction where he developed a particular interest in the use of advanced technology for the management of Craniomaxillofacial congenital and acquired deformity. His final year in Toronto was spent as Craniofacial Fellow at Sick Kids Hospital, where he gained extensive exposure to all aspects of paediatric acquired and congenital deformities, especially craniosynostosis and orthognathic surgery.

 

Mr Murray completed his training with a fellowship in aesthetic surgery at the renowned McIndoe Centre at East Grinstead, UK, before taking up a post as consultant plastic surgeon at the Children’s University Hospital Temple Street and the Mater Hospital. His areas of specialist interest include craniofacial and orthognathic surgery as well as all aspects of paediatric plastic surgery and microsurgical head and neck reconstruction. 

 

He is the Clinical Lead at the National Paediatric Craniofacial Centre and has a keen interest in research. He is involved with the Tissue Engineering Research Group (TERG) at the Royal College of Surgeons as well as the Trinity Bioengineering Science Institute.

Mr Richard Hanson

Mr Hanson graduated from University College Dublin in 1997 and completed both his Basic Surgical and Higher Surgical Training in Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery at The Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland. He has trained in several units throughout Ireland, the UK and Australia including the world famous McIndoe Aesthetic Fellowship at East Grinstead in the U.K. 

 

His areas of specialist interest include hand surgery, breast surgery including autologous reconstructive techniques and aesthetic breast surgery, skin cancer and facial aesthetic techniques. He values Continued Professional Development and routinely travels throughout Europe and North America attending conferences and working with international leaders in the field. 

 

Richard is an active member of the Irish Association of Plastic Surgeons, The American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), the largest plastic surgery specialty organization in the world and The International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ISAPS), the leading international body of board-certified aesthetic plastic surgeons

Mr Robert Caulfield

Mr Caulfield graduated from UCD in 1995 and following completion of his Basic Surgical Training Scheme at St Vincent’s Hospital in Dublin and a further 2 years as Plastic Surgery SHO at Beaumont Hospital and St James’s Hospital, he moved to the UK to continue his training. 

 

In the UK he completed 2 years of research into wound healing and burns as part of his MD as Duke of Kent Research Fellow, based at The John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford and Stoke Mandeville Hospital in Aylesbury. This was followed by the Pan Thames (London) Specialist Registrar Training Scheme in Plastic Surgery, during which he spent 3 years working at the world famous St Andrew’s Unit in Chelmsford, spending 2 years working specifically in the areas of breast reconstruction and aesthetic / congenital breast surgery. He then spent 18 months in the renowned unit at East Grinstead, again working in the area of breast reconstruction. A further 2 years were spent on specialist training fellowships including a 12 month Oncoplastic Breast Reconstruction/Aesthetic Breast Fellowship at the Christie Hospital in Manchester, a JCST Interface Cosmetic Fellowship in London, and a microsurgery fellowship at Charing Cross Hospital in London. 

 

Mr Caulfield gained his CCT in Plastic Surgery in 2010 and spent 2 years working as Consultant Plastic Surgeon in Sheffield UK before returning to take up a post as Consultant Plastic Surgeon at the Mater Hospital. His areas of specialist interest include breast reconstruction and aesthetic breast surgery, as well as all aspects of general plastic surgery.
